My Story and my mission

Emma and Bonnie

My mission is for dogs to have a more fulfilling and energetic life. I am a qualified Galen Myotherapist that uses deep therapeutic massage to increase mobility and reduce discomfort in dogs by using muscles assessments and hands on massage treatments or remote support using the Galen  ®  Distance Support Programme.

I get it, you want your precious dog to be in the best of hands! Here’s how I got here…

Having had two prolapsed discs myself and avoiding surgery through muscle work, I knew that my muscles were key to my enjoyment of life, both through the physical activities I could do and through not needing to manage chronic pain year after year with pain medication.

It gets you down after a while, so I thought why wouldn’t this be the same for dogs?

One day I took my 8-year-old Jack Russell, Bonnie, (with arthritis in her hips) for Galen Myotherapy treatments at the Galen Myotherapy Centre in Bolney, West Sussex. It worked so profoundly. She seemed younger, was fitter and enjoyed her walks again with reduced discomfort.

So, I found my purpose in life to enrich dogs’ lives through therapeutic massage. Plus, it has the beautiful extra bonus of enriching the lives of guardians too, as they see their dogs happier and more mobile.

I couldn’t ask for a more rewarding career than to be a Galen Myotherapist to improve mobility and reduce discomfort in dogs (our loyal companions and perhaps canine angels)?

Much love, Emma (and Bonnie) x

How I can Help

Galen Myotherapy logo and a dog

What is Galen Myotherapy ®?

Galen Myotherapy ® is therapeutic massage for your precious dog (think therapeutic sports massage with your dogs full compliance). We never use forced restraint and treatments will always take place on the floor or on a low level within your home, which is where a dog is most comfortable.

Galen Myotherapy can be highly effective in many conditions and situations, including:

  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Ongoing lameness that is typically difficult to pin-point accurately
  • Osteoarthritis – especially in dogs that are intolerant to anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Patella subluxation (think the ‘Jack Russell Hop’)
  • Behavioural issues
  • Compensatory issues
  • Whiplash caused from impact at speed
  • Enhancing the health and performance of sporting dogs – ‘Keeping Working Dogs Working’
  • Pre-surgery: preparation of muscles, for example the shoulders often compensate when joints are recovering from surgery.
  • Post-surgery:after the ‘acute’ immediate symptoms have reduced, this is when their muscles play an essential part in getting your dog back on their paws – this is when ‘chronic’ compensation and the over and underworking of muscles take place, which creates the longer-term mobility and discomfort concerns.

I focus on your dog’s soft tissues that surround the joints, as well as where they may be compensating elsewhere from injuries or discomfort. The aim is to reduce discomfort, improve mobility and, importantly, improve the quality of your dog’s life (such as tangible goals like enjoying walks more, running, able to jump on and off the sofa again, able to play again).

We also find that owners feel they enhance their bond with their beloved dogs and enjoy walks and valuable social time together.

How we improve mobility and reduce discomfort:

Galen Myotherapy  ® treatments are totally specific to your dog. We work very closely with you, giving clear information and instructions all the way through the treatment process.

‘Teamwork makes the dreamwork’! It is likely that in between treatments I will be asking you to do some at home treatments (which, of course, I’ll teach you). This is not only great for bonding, it also means that we can improve your dog’s mobility faster so they can get back to chasing squirrels, making the most of their walks or even longer snoozes without feeling stiff afterwards (all realistic goals your dog would choose)!

Practically every lameness in a dog will be from a muscular problem and most of the conditions we see are as a result of underlying conditions, old injuries or repetitive strains. My plan is to compliment any other treatments or medical conditions so your vet will give feedback to me before any treatment and special care your dog needs.

Working directly with your vet is a fundamental part why Galen Myotherapists are credible and you are in safe hands. It is a legal requirement of the UK Veterinary Act to have veterinary consent and all Galen Myotherapists are fully qualified and insured.

Galen Myotherapy  ®  is covered by many pet Insurance plans which is great!

Your vet may contact me directly or, if you are coming to me directly, then we’ll work together to get the veterinary consent needed so we can start making a difference to your dog.

Galen Myotherapy is highly credible and was established by Julia Robertson in 2002 who is at the forefront of interpreting how behaviour and muscle pain manifest in our dogs.

Galens' relationship with with CAM (Canine Arthritis Management)

Emma Newell & Julia Robertson - Crufts 2020

Julia established Galen Therapy Centre in 2002 and since then has worked tirelessly to improve dogs lives and their health. In this time she has treated over 8,000 dogs and trained hundreds of people in Galen Myotherapy techniques.

Don’t just believe us! Hannah Capon MRCVS Managing Director of C.A.M is quoted as saying ‘

"Julia and Galen were a catalyst in the creation of Canine Arthritis Management. Through doing the Galen Myotherapy diploma, my eyes were opened to the physical and emotional signs of pain and discomfort we see in our dogs. It also opened my mind to improved ways to manage it. I am so pleased to see that they have created a course for owners to also gain that new perspective. They say they 'enrich the lives of dogs'; they really do!"
